KATHMANDU: The legendary Jai Nepal Cinemas, situated in the Hattisar area of Kathmandu, has formally restarted its operations under fresh ownership, signaling the return of one of the nation’s most historic movie venues.
Founded back in 1952 A.D. (2009 B.S.), Jai Nepal has served for decades as a frontline witness to the evolution of Nepali filmmaking. Unfortunately, the venue fell quiet during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis and was ultimately pushed to close its doors entirely by 2021. Now, Buzz Entertainment has breathed new life into the space with a refreshed strategy that bridges its rich legacy with contemporary theater standards.

For generations, Jai Nepal was celebrated as a cornerstone of Kathmandu’s cultural and film landscape. It famously served as the launchpad for the QFX franchise and was a preferred spot for both former royalty and legendary filmmakers of yesteryear. Its return grants a fresh demographic of moviegoers—especially young adults between 18 and 30—the unique chance to watch cinema inside a hall steeped in heritage, a stark contrast to today’s standard malls.

The restoration initiative is directed by Chairman Sanjay Vastav Shrestha, Managing Director Rupesh Shrestha, and Board Director Hari Krishna Lohala. Their approach has earned praise for successfully aligning commercial objectives with historical conservation. Instead of converting this vintage single-screen space into a standard commercial complex, the leadership intends to maintain its identity as a “living museum of Nepali cinema.”
Cutting-Edge Tech Meets Vintage Soul
According to Sanjay Vastav Shrestha, the venue has debuted “MAC Technology” for the first time nationwide, delivering vastly upgraded audio fidelity and a superior viewing environment.
While maintaining the sentimental feel of classic movie halls, Jai Nepal has overhauled its layout by introducing premium “Gold” and “Platinum” tier balcony options, alongside cozy “Slipper Seats” engineered for ultimate relaxation. This fusion of state-of-the-art amenities and vintage charm is being hailed as a blueprint for heritage-focused commercial ventures.

The restart follows the resolution of previous legal and structural debates regarding the Tukucha River zoning regulations, which were cleared up by a recent judicial ruling and revised guidelines, ensuring a stable path forward for the business.

Situated in the accessible neighborhood of Hattisar, the theater intends to offer a cost-effective, seamless, and serene movie-watching option that is open to all community members, Shrestha noted.
Even though movie rollouts at the location actually commenced on April 26 (Baisakh 13), the leadership mentioned that a formal red-carpet opening gala will be scheduled in the near future to mark the milestone.

The successful resurrection of Jai Nepal Cinemas is anticipated to spark similar restoration projects and long-term conservation efforts for other endangered historic theaters and cultural hotspots throughout Nepal.
